Show-n-Tell Disappointment

Every Friday is show-n-tell, today being the first one. Each week the kids learn a letter then bring something to show the class that starts with that letter. This week's letter was "B". So, all week we talked about what we would be taking. Henry decided on Bosk, a bounty hunter from Star Wars, that throws bombs. Excellent! Nelson, early in the week, decided on Bumble Bee, from Transformers. Again, excellent choice. So, last night I instructed them to set their items on the kitchen table as not to forget them this morning. Nelson retrieves his and sets it on the table. I noticed he had the little Bumble Bee, which I'm not even sure where it came from, perhaps a birthday party gift bag or kid's meal.

Me: "Nelson, why are you taking that one and not the super cool one Nana bought for you this summer?"

Nelson: "I just want to take this one. It's easier to transform and it will fit in my lunch box."

Me: "Really? Are you sure?"

Nelson: "Yes."

Alright, so we get to school this morning. As soon as we get in I notice all the boys huddled around in a circle. What are they looking at? H&N squeeze in to see. At the same time I realize what it is, Nelson does as well. Josh has brought the super cool Bumble Bee, and everyone is enthralled. Nelson looks up at me with what I can only describe as utter devastation and disappointment. I could see him wanting to say, "Please take me home to get the super cool Bumble Bee...Please!" But he didn't. The look slowly faded to acceptance and I kissed them goodbye.

On the way home from school this afternoon we talked about show-n-tell, and the importance of busting out your guns (I don't mean that literally), bringing the heat, the GOODS! You can NOT bring last week's happy meal score.

Lesson learned!

And, you can bet that when the letter "E" rolls around my boys will have the Escalade on display...Even if I have to drive the damn thing down there myself.

Have a good looooooong weekend all.

I am laughing out loud over here - we have lots of show and tell debacles too!

Oh Nelson, you honey, you. Your Mama's class is rubbing off on you already. Just wait until E!

Great post, Paula.
