We were up at 5:30 and out the door by 6:00. We arrived at the beach 45 minutes later. Not late, but just in time for an event so thrilling, exciting, enthralling and endearing that a Sunday morning daybreak rise was well worth the effort.
The Kemp's Ridley turtles were journeying home.
Throngs of people gathered to watch.
The 2 day old turtles were gently placed in the sand.
Then they began their journey.
Roughly the size of a silver dollar...
They look toward the sun and slowly make their way...
They face plenty of obstacles.
Finally they reach the water and the true test of their survival begins.
We watched this release at Padre Island National Seashore this morning. As we left the park I was reading the news on my iPhone and this article came up a headline. The timing was uncanny and the story goes to show that even the smallest little creatures, 100s of miles from the BP oil spill, are still caught in the uncertainty and shrouded in controversy.
SWIM SOUTH LITTLE RIDLEYS... SWIM SOUTH!!
