After way too many hours of allowing the boys to try out their new Wii games we decided an excursion to the wildlife refuge was needed. Rumor had it that the Whooping Cranes were visiting the park and in our last two visits we had been eluded by these rare birds.

We found the American Alligator lounging in the sun.

The boys and I; eyes peeled for the whoopers.

 An Osprey and his lunch.

This young one was keeping close to her Mama.

And, alas, the Whooping Crane. We saw one pair in the park from the lookout tower then were given special intstrucitons of where others had recently been spotted. Sure enough, about 75 yards off the highway, three Whooping Cranes were eating under a deer feeder.  We pulled over to the side of the road, I climbed up on the top of the SUV and snapped a few photos. I wish we could have gotten closer. It's hard to tell in these photos but this beautiful bird stands 5 feet tall and has a wing span of 7.  Amazing.. Magestic...And, ever elusive.

Savannah thinks you were too close to that alligator...I hope one of your lenses made it look closer than you actually were!

That photo of the osprey mid flight is so great!

And thanks for the recommendation to the Read Tent. So many people have told me to read this book. I have it so it is next on my list! Thanks!
