In the Nick of Time
It's another first for us, being in kindergarten and all.
The Valentine box.
We dug out our best shoe boxes from the garage then made a special trip to the craft store. We picked out colors to wrap our boxes in and plenty of heart-shaped stickers and doily things to cover it. I knew the boys would not go for red or pink or white to cover their boxes, so I though green and blue the perfect choice for 6-year-old boy taste.
After putting the boys to bed Tuesday evening I got out my scissors and tape and went to wrapping these little boxes. This is no easy task I assure you, or perhaps you know. It's nothing like wrapping a present; the box still has to open. If they only knew how many times I rewrapped Nelson's box.. How many pieces of tape I used to get it just right... Or what unGodly hour I finally finished and went to bed...
Yesterday I picked the boys up from school and in my most excited voice, because I really was excited, I said, "Let's go home and decorate our boxes!"
In which I get a, "Sure. Okay." unenthusiastic reply from the back seat.
And we do just that. Sit down with our supplies. The boys slap a few stickers on and say they are done.
"Really? That's it?" I say.
Done. Well, that was not quite as fun as I thought it was going to be but whatever.
Fast forward to this morning before school...
I instructed the boys to do the usual, "Get your shoes on. Get your backpacks... And, don't forget your Valentine boxes."
Henry follows me into my bedroom, box in hand, and says, "Mom, if they tell us our boxes are wrong it is your fault and I am going to tell them that."
In which I reply, "Henry, I bet you all the money in your piggy bank that no one is going to tell you your box is wrong... Are you not happy with your box?"
He looks down at the ground with an ashamed gesture and shakes his head.
"What is your problem with your box? I love it."
He replies, "It's covered in hearts... Just hearts. Pink and red hearts. There's not even one superhero on it."
Nelson pipes up that he is in total agreement in regards to his shameful-heart covered ridiculous box too.
With just minutes to spare before we are out the door I suggest they grab stickers and fix it up.. Nelson is back before I can finish my statement with the LEGO Miniature Ultimate Sticker Collection book and is peeling and sticking as fast as he possibly can...
Phew! Embarassing-heart shaped-ridiculous Valentine box debacle thwarted just in the nick of time!

Oh my gosh - that is hysterical! Chase insisted I wrap his in BLUE paper. They are decorating them in class during their party on Monday. And, um, I was in charge of buying supplies. And uh, there is not one single super hero sticker in my stash. Perhaps I should make another run to Hobby Lobby for some boyish stuff. It didn't even dawn on me....... Thanks... in advance... from Chase and ever other BOY in his class! :D
That is too funny! I loved making valentine's boxes with my daughter. This was the first year they stopped making them- 6th grade. Last year she constructed her "finale" Valentine's Day box in The Matrix theme. It was actually quite cool and I wish I still had it!
Hysterical! I love the added touches to complete their boxes...and the wrapping job was great, mama. Those boxes are hard to wrap. I hope they liked the girlie Valentines they received:)
