Green Rebellion

St. Patrick's Morning:

Me: "Okay boys! It is St. Patrick's Day which means we need to wear something green so we don't get pinched."

Henry: "Yes! Green is my favorite color." As he picks out green pants and a green shirt that says, "I'm going green."

Nelson: "I am wearing this shirt." He holds up a shirt that is not green.

Me: "Why don't you wear that shirt tomorrow and today wear this one that has the Hulk on it since he is green. I am telling you everyone in your class is going to have green on, and besides you love this Marvel shirt."

Nelson: "No. I am wearing this shirt." This is odd as I am usually begging them to wear something other than a superhero shirt.

Me: "Okay. Suit yourself. It's really not a big deal."

We arrive at school and what do you know, everyone is in green. Ms. Jones, in her greenest best says, "Nelson! Where's your green?"

Nelson: "I am not wearing green today."

I kissed him on the head and proceeded to the car where I immediately called his father to tell him about the morning rebellion.

He in turn told me the story of his grandmother. She was a Hyde. A descendant of the Irish Protestants. A descendant of a major conflict in history involving the Protestants and the Catholics... The green vs. the orange...And she would not be caught dead wearing green on St. Patrick's Day.

And apparently neither will Nelson...

I had heard once that I had an ancestor of the Protestant orange-wearers as well; I didn't know what they were called though.

I work at a rather multi-cultural school and it is fun to see green on enthusiastic kids of all kinds of skin colors.
