Movie Review: The Karate Kid
The boys and I did a Wednesday matinee showing of The Karate Kid. We had just recently rented the original with Danielson and Mr. Miyagi and so were very anxious to see how this one would compare. The answer: It is an EXACT comparison. Of course, I mean in relation to the actual story; boy moves to new town, local kids beat up boy, boy meets girl, old man helps boy learn to kick mean boys' butts, boy fights in tournament. While the original is Japanese-Karate based, the new one is Chinese-Kung Fu based. Rather than a Puerto Rican kid from Jersey this one is an African-American kid from Detroit. Other than those minor details the movie follows the exact story of the original and carries the same excitement of cringing blows to the heroin, a love interest, and the final edge-of-your-seat battle with the lead-bully. Loved it, even knowing what was going to happen, just as I loved the original.
As for the boys, they too were way into it (in spite of it being 2 hours and 20 minutes long). Nelson however went into the movie thinking the mini-Fresh Prince was a girl (the braids through him). He was totally convinced he was a girl. At one point in the movie "Dre" kisses his girlfriend. I looked over at Nelson and he had this perplexed look on his face, then he looked over at me and did a little shoulder shrug as if to say, "Well that's odd. But, okay." Finally, when the movie was over, I asked him if he still thought it was a girl. He replied, "No. Because boys don't beat up girls." "This is true." I replied. I couldn't help but think that it was kind of cool that he thought this little school girl was kicking a lot of mean boys' butts.

thanks for the review! I've been dying to know how this one adds up. I totally love Jackie Chan, am super excited to see little Will Smith, and love the original Karate Kid. I was thinking and hoping it would be a great movie. My husband on the other hand, thinks it'll be cheesy. I'll be happy to let him know what your review says! :0)
